About Hearts

Hearts is the classic trick-taking card game for four players — here you play against three AI opponents. Avoid taking hearts and the dreaded Queen of Spades, or take them all to shoot the moon. The lowest score when someone reaches 100 wins.

How to play

  1. Each round starts by passing three cards (left, right, across, then no pass).
  2. The 2 of clubs leads the first trick; follow suit if you can.
  3. Each heart is 1 point and the Queen of Spades is 13 — you want as few as possible.
  4. Hearts can't be led until one has been played.
  5. Shoot the moon: take every heart and the Queen to give everyone else 26 points.

Strategy & practical tips

  1. Before passing, consider which high cards are difficult to shed and whether passing can leave you short in a suit.
  2. Track the Queen of Spades. Holding a high spade becomes more dangerous while the Queen is still unplayed.
  3. Watch for an opponent collecting all the penalties. A deliberate shoot-the-moon attempt needs a different response from ordinary point avoidance.

A common mistake

Trying to avoid every single point while allowing one opponent to collect every heart and the Queen. That can turn into a moon shot.
